About Me
My name is Garrett Kern. I am 24 years old, a graduate of the University of Michigan, and a dedicated student and practinioner of the culinary arts.
Ever since I was a small child I loved to cook. I would help my mother in the kitchen, watch cooking shows on television and enjoy dining out as a family. I was soon determined to become a chef someday. Eventually I started experimenting on my own in the kitchen and created some raving successes and astounding failures. I began working in restaurants at the age of sixteen. I knew the owners of an Italian restaurant in the Chicago suburbs and began as most do: peeling potatoes and washing dishes. I worked at Giuseppe’s for 5 years in the catering and banquet department. In Ann Arbor I worked at BD’s Mongolian Barbeque and as a line cook at Travis Pointe Country Club.
Today I live in Chicago and my entire life revolves around food. I’ve learned a lot about food in my life and I continue to learn a wealth of new information everyday. There are many ways one can measure their success as a chef but my goal as a future chef is to learn something new about food every single day.
I created this website as a forum to share my work and experiences with people. I will frequently post recipes that I have developed, write about culinary successes and failures, and react to my experiences in the culinary world. I invite and encourage critical discussion, idea exchange, and professional advice. I also created this website as a sort of digital professional portfolio. People can use Garrett’s Table to see the value of my education and the reach of my personal and professional life. Lastly, and most importantly, I created my website to encourage myself and others to keep cooking and creating. Enjoy Garrett’s Table and I look forward to hearing from you!
